Lake Mead National Recreation Area, America’s First National Recreation Area is located a short drive outside of Las Vegas. It was created after the building of Hoover Dam and is home to one of the largest reservoirs in North America.
Getting there also means you get to travel through beautiful and Historic Boulder City!
The Drive Yourself Loop!
A popular “Drive Yourself Loop” is to head north out of Las Vegas on Interstate 15. Visit the Valley of Fire State Park. Exit to the east and drive through Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Stop off at some of the overlooks. Stop at Hemenway Harbor, If you time it right, enjoy a lunch or dinner cruise on the Desert Princess, visit Hoover Dam. Head into Boulder City for a little shopping and dining, then head back to Las Vegas.
Word of Warning. The drive part is a little over 3 hours. However, you are going to want to make stops along the way. Get out and walk or hike and stop for food and beverages. So plan to make it a full day!

- Public transportation does not extend to Lake Mead NRA. Tour buses and commercial tours may be available from your hotel.
- Lake Mead National Recreation Area is part of the National Park Services. Your America the Beautiful National Park Pass (National Park Pass) will work for entry.
